Onion Juice May Help Regrow Hair in Patchy Alopecia Areata

A small study has found that applying onion juice to the scalp may help people with patchy hair loss (alopecia areata) regrow their hair. The research, published in the Journal of Dermatology, included 38 participants who applied fresh onion juice to their scalp twice daily. After eight weeks, 86–87% of participants showed noticeable hair regrowth.

Experts suggest that the high sulfur content in onions plays a key role. Sulfur helps produce keratin, strengthens hair follicles, and may activate dormant follicles. Onion juice also contains quercetin, an antioxidant, and antibacterial compounds, which support a healthy scalp environment.

However, the study involved a small number of participants and only focused on alopecia areata. There’s no proven effect on male or female pattern baldness. Some people may experience scalp irritation, itching, or find the strong smell of onions unpleasant. Despite these limitations, researchers say onion juice could be a natural and affordable option for those with patchy hair loss.
